Kelsey Plant Hire are at the forefront of the plant hire industry. Having an already established company with our diesel machines, we also took the big step to start hiring electric machines. And now we have also started to introduce electric compacter plates. Diesel plant machinery is only hired out to customers within a estimated 25 radius of where we are based. There are lots of plant hire companies in the UK, so we don’t feel the need to expand this at the moment. Although we are often asked about hire further afield. But electric machines are offered for hire right across the UK. Due to the fact that they are growing in popularity, but not many companies actually hold them in stock. This means our demand is vast and all these machines will now be seen as far as Scotland, Cornwall or Wales.

Today, companies and projects are coming under increasing pressure to consider the environment. With reduced carbon footprints, less harmful emissions and lower noise pollution. We can provide you with solutions to these problems. We know that electric powered, emission free equipment is the way forward. So we are committed to continually adding to our hire fleet, as new electrically powered machines enter the market.

Hybrid Electric Diggers & Fully Electric Dumpers – Emission Free – Low Noise

Increasing environmental pressure and advances in modern technology mean there is talk that the ‘good old’ diesel engine will be phased out over the next 20-30 years.

In the construction industry there is a serious move towards the green spectrum. Big name manufacturers are busy working on prototype fully electric, emission free plant machinery but its going to be a good few years before these will be available in the market.

However, Japanese manufacturer Takeuchi, unveiled their first ever hybrid diesel / electric 1.5 tonne digger, TB216H, in March 2017 and have since added the micro hybrid digger, TB210H.

Features and benefits when plugged in include:

  • Continuous use, with running costs of about £1 per hr
  • Zero emissions
  • No noise
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint

These are the same excellent machines that you are used to hiring from us but these models are dual power. Plugged into 3 phase (or generator up to max 150m away) they switch easily from diesel to electric, becoming emission free, practically silent and with no loss of digging power whatsoever.

Kelsey Plant Hire has taken a bold and forward thinking step. We now have these hybrid diesel / electric diggers in our hire fleet because we know many of you are already having to consider emission free, low noise options on some projects and this pressure will only increase. Whilst these machines are not cheap to hire they add huge environmental value to your bid and could certainly make the difference between winning and losing contracts.

We have also added fully electric 1 tonne skip loading dumpers and tracked dumpers to our fleet for 2018.

Our all electric skip loading dumpers, both 1 tonne and 1.5 tonne, are perfectly suited for work indoors without creating any air or noise pollution.

These versatile dumpers can also be used outside providing that the terrain is solid and gradients do not exceed 15 degrees.

Features and benefits include:

  • Fully electric
  • Zero emissions
  • No noise
  • Highly manoeuvrable
  • Capable of 8 hours use between charging
  • High-tip, skip loading ability
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint

Both the diesel / electric Hybrid mini diggers and the fully electric skip loading dumpers are needed for refurbishment projects and essential for work in places which are in continuous use, for example:

  • Hospitals
  • Operation centres
  • Food processing centres
  • Transport hubs (airports, stations etc)

And perfect for projects within or close vicinity to:

  • Demolition sites
  • Basements
  • Any underground or enclosed site
  • Refurbishment projects

So you’re starting a new project and need to hire a mini-excavator, but which one do you choose? There are many on the market but the choice you make will always depend on the type of project you’re undertaking, as some models will suit your needs better than others.

The job of finding the right kit is a lot simpler than you might think. Mini-excavators range from 0.5 tonnes right through to over 500 tonnes. From laying roads, utilities work and landscaping, to digging garden pools, forestry and construction projects, the mini-excavator is a versatile piece of equipment – the Swiss army knife of plant hire.

When considering which mini-excavator is right for you, here are some points to bear in mind:

  1. How big is the job?
  2. What type of work is it?
  3. Will you need a range of attachments, such as buckets, compaction equipment, rippers or hammers?
  4. Will you be using the mini-excavator for long periods. if so, comfort will be key.

A digger for every job

Used commonly for landscaping projects, the 1.5 tonne digger is a nimble operator with enough mechanical power to complete simple jobs quickly and efficiently. Fit to tackle anything from domestic, back garden digging – for a pond or pool, for example – to move intensive utilities work or trench digging. The 1.5-tonner will cope comfortably.

Used commonly for ground works and earthmoving, the 3-tonne digger has plenty of power and greater torque than its smaller cousin. This is coupled with a high performance hydraulic system, providing greater oil flow for faster cycle times and increased efficiency.

For heavy duty tasks, a step up to the 5-tonne digger is recommended, especially for road works, big construction and large scale, professional landscaping. The 5-tonner is both powerful but compact in size – extremely versatile when in action but small enough for travel between sites.

Nimble enough to navigate uneven terrain, or when being deployed in more urban settings, the 8-tonne digger has grown in popularity in recent years. Many of the best models on the market balance a number of key features: smooth hydraulics, powerful engine performance, good cycle time, efficiency and good serviceability. Choosing a model with a zero or reduced tail swing is also recommended. This ensures enhanced visibility and maximum performance when working in confined spaces.

Of course, it’s not just about the right size for the right job, reliability is an essential consideration for any hire or purchase. Minimising downtime is crucial for productivity and profitability, however big the job, so search out brands known for good reliability.

Manufacturers like Takeuchi are renowned for reliability, efficiency and performance, which is why they continue to be a popular choice for long-term hire, where minimising downtime is often top priority. Takeuchi’s heritage and proven track record for reliability are just two reasons why we’ve recently invested in a large range of new Takeuchi mini-excavators across the weight categories.

All our mini-excavators are hired out with a full set of buckets, and we can also provide you with a useful range of additional attachments, including hydraulic breakers and augers.

Because every job and customer need is different, it’s important to give ample thought to which machine might be right for you, before investing. If you need a helping hand, our experienced team will be happy to chat through your requirements and recommend a model that’s the right one for you. Give us a call or drop by to chat to one of our team.

Tools and Machinery

There are always new and improved tools and machinery being made available for the construction industry. Here are our top 5 innovations that we think you might like:

1 – Our new niche dumper of course! We’ve taken delivery of another 2 tonne Thwaites high-lift swivel-tip dumper. These are rare beasts in the plant hire world, but we have found that for some sites this is the only dumper that will do the job. A typical hire fleet will include 1 tonne forward-tipping skiploaders and 3 tonne swivel tips, but rarely will you find this particular 2 tonne dumper, capable of doing both. Take a look.

2 Tonne Dumper Hire

When you’re in a tight site and need side-on skip-loading capability we have these little dumpers available for you to hire!

If you are interested in hiring this new machine, contact us
2 – Wearable smart sensors
For safety, many building firms are now putting smart sensors in employee’s work clothes including hardhats, boots and other safety gear. These sensors help to keep track of things such as how long someone has been on their feet, if an impact to a hardhat takes place, and body temperature through a wristwatch sensor!

3 – Self-healing concrete
Cracking of cement is a major issue in construction, normally caused by exposure to water and chemicals. Researchers at Bath University are looking to develop a self-healing concrete, using a mix containing bacteria within microcapsules, which will germinate when water enters a crack in the concrete to produce limestone, plugging the crack before water and oxygen has a chance to corrode the steel reinforcement.

4 – Photo-voltaic glazing
Integrated photo-voltaic (BIPV) glazing can help buildings generate their own electricity, by turning the outside of a building into a solar panel. There are companies that provide transparent photo-voltaic glass as a building material for windows, facades and roofs. This can save on on energy bills as well as earn feed-in tariff revenues, and the cost is not a lot higher than traditional glass – construction and framework costs remain, but cladding and shading system costs are replaced.

5 – Online construction review tool
There are cloud-based systems out there for architects and engineers to use in order to keep track of construction projects, specifically, the installations that take place e.g. beams and light fittings. It will also create a PDF of snag items that occur during construction which users can add notes to. Trials of the system have shown possible savings of around 60% compared with the usual paper review methods. Here’s an example

How to move the earth!

When you’re building a conservatory or an extension around the back of a house you can often find that access for plant machinery is almost non existent, sometimes just a narrow alleyway down the side of the house.

One problem encountered when working in a tight space like this will be how to shift the pile of excavated earth or rubble thats been produced. With the 8 cu.yd skip sitting out on the drive you might think that the only option is to use a wheel barrow. This would take many back breaking trips to and fro, not to mention the difficult balancing act up scaffold boards to tip the load into the skip.

Kelsey Plant Hire have the answer with our mini tracked dumpers. These 690mm (2 feet 3 inches) width machines can easily get to through those narrow little places. They carry a labour saving 500kg load whilst only exerting approximately 3.75psi ground pressure (a third that of the average labourer himself at 10psi) – handy when ground conditions become too soft for wheel barrows !!

The really great thing about the mini tracked dumper is that it can easily lift and tip its load directly over the side of a waste skip. Job done!!

Kelsey Plant Hire buy another customer favourite

Kelsey Plant Hire have taken delivery of yet another 8 tonne digger. The last few months have been very busy and there has been great demand for machines of this size. The decision was made to invest in a Takeuchi TB285. This rubber tracked excavator has a maximum digging depth of 4570mm (15ft) making it very versatile. It is also compact featuring a shorter than average tail swing compared to standard 8.5-tonne diggers minimising potential damage when excavating in restricted areas. More importantly, our customers have told us that they like operating the Takeuchi !!
